End of Week Six

A month and a half? Really? It has flown by. Let me start off by saying we haven't been working out lately. We did for the first two weeks every morning and did great. We were also eating healthier - lots of vegetables and protein, no carbs. Then Kristen's mom and dad came to visit. Over Halloween.

I exercised two days that week, and I think I exercised one other day since then. So...bad at the whole exercise bit. We also didn't eat as healthy as we had been eating. The following week we had good intentions with food, but had some rough days (especially with the kids) where we ended up not making a single thing on the menu the entire week, and almost no exercise as I mentioned.

Then we just slacked the following week. Like, didn't even try. But it was mostly because we knew we were going to Texas to visit family (which was a lot of fun). Of course, while in Texas we ate out a lot. We got back from Texas yesterday, and ordered pizza for dinner. But you know what?

I STILL LOST WEIGHT. Down to 173.4 lbs. as of this morning. I attribute it primarily to portion control. I eat less, and only eat until just before I'm full at most. If I eat too much, of course I'm going to gain (unhealthy) weight. So I don't. In fact, last night I had 3 slices of pizza instead of my usual 4 or 5 (or more). In fact, I broke my rule with that third slice, because I was already pretty full.

Anyway, the point is that we're still working on it, even though we've slacked as of late. And the key (for me) has been not overeating. I also don't eat something unless I really want it. For example, why waste my time (or calories) on a Crunch bar? If there isn't a Reese's, I don't bother. Same with soda. Most of the time, water is just great - once in a blue moon, it's nice to have an ice-cold Dr. Pepper, but other sodas? Juice? Not worth it.

Certainly I need to start working out again if I want to get more in shape, but at least I'm not going back up. That's what I'm trying to avoid.

End of Week One

As I mentioned before, I exercise in fits and starts. I did P90X, then Insanity (for about 5-6 weeks). And when I've tried to get going again, I've done Insanity (parts of it). I'm not usually very consistent. Which is why I held off posting my first exercise post until Thursday, even though I started on Monday (Oct. 12). I didn't want to fall off the bandwagon after having talked it up.

Thursday (Day 4), I had a hard time getting out of bed, but I did it anyway. Friday was a little easier, and I got to sleep in (as much as I can sleep in with kids) and work out on Saturday. As much as I only want to weigh myself once a week,  I still do it every morning. At the beginning of the week, I weighed 182.6 lbs. When I weighed myself this morning, I was 179.6 lbs, so I lost about half a pound a day, or 3 lbs this week. I broke 180! I'm not sure the last time I weighed less than that. It's definitely been a while, though.

Still eating carb-free for another week, and then we have guests staying with us. So here's to another week of healthy living, lowering cholesterol, and getting rid of flab.

Starting Over

164.6

That's where I was 5 years ago in 2010, when I thought I needed to lose weight. Man, things sure change in a few years. I'd love to be 164.6 at this point. Right now, I'm sitting at 182.6 lbs, which is actually down about 10-12 pounds from my high of I think 194.8 (I don't know for sure, because I was disgusted and didn't want to think about it).

As a side note, I've probably lost weight because I've been eating less lately - not a lot of second servings, and not eating dessert each night. I've also been working a lot around the house, so I'm fairly active. Usually on weekends I end up not eating much at all, which isn't a great strategy . I've probably lost muscle mass as opposed to fat mass. My man boobs certainly haven't diminished. :P Some men get a big gut when they gain weight. I don't - mine is kind of all over, especially in my face/neck and my love handles (and apparently my chest - gross).

Since moving to Minneapolis, between starting a new job (where I end up sitting at my desk and in meetings a lot), and traveling a lot (where I eat a lot of delicious food on the company dime), I've gained about 20-30 pounds. Not all (or any?) of it muscle, let me tell you. I've slacked off in working out, with the exception of a week or two here and there, and I eat a lot of cookies.

But that ends today. Kristen and I both decided that we want to change, and the times I've been really successful, we've supported each other. So this morning we woke up at 6:30 a.m. and exercised. I'm doing another Beachbody workout: T25. Kristen is dancing to "Just Dance 4" on the Wii. For the next 12 days we will also be eating low carb, and over the next three months will periodically do so (we have some trips, people visiting, and the holidays coming up, so won't be doing it the whole time). It is what gets the best results. Hopefully in conjunction with working out, we'll get feeling better about our bodies soon. Also, we'll get ready for our cruise to Cozumel on January 16!

I don't care a ton about weight - it's about losing fat. If I were 182.6, but all muscle, I'd be completely fine with it. However, I'm not a body builder, so around 150-155 while exercising and getting toned is probably a healthy weight for me. So that's what I'm shooting for.
